Troubled Seas - Johnny Hawken
Johnny Hawken is a talented musician and surfer from the coastal town of Torquay, Victoria. Johnny was lead guitarist in the band 'Red Rattle Snake', which was fronted by a young Xavier Rudd. In his mid 20's Johnny finally discovered his singing voice, and started performing solo.
More recently, Johnny has toured Tasmania, played the Rip Curl Pro with The John Steele Singers, supported Pete Murray and Ash Grunwald. He is also now playing in the Geelong blues band, The Mojo Corner and the lead guitarist. Johnny plays regular gigs with his band The Royales.
Trouble - The Mojo Corner
The Mojo Corner's recent track history includes that they are the 2010 winners of the MLG Presents Australian Blues and Roots Competiton. They played at the 2010 Queenscliff Music Festival along side the likes of Clare Bowdich, The Vasco Era, Ash Grunwald, and John Williamson. Along with this, they have supported many other prolific artsits as Jeff Martin, Jeff Lang, Geoff Achison, Lloyd Spiegal and Collard Greens and Gravy.
Deep growling, wailing, blues harp. Hammering guitar work of signature discordant blues, driving rhythm and soaring, biting rust and steel solos. Heavy rocky percussion, cleverly paced and paired off symbiotically with the bedrock bass that blues rock demands. And home-grown songs that breathe a familiarity and freshness at once in their hard rock blues. These things don't come about every day.
The Way We Were Raised - Andrew Swift
‘The Way We Were Raised’ is a turbulent voyage, a deeply personal one at that, covering particular events throughout his life that shaped the musician that he is today. Swift laid down the bass, drums and piano at The Base Studio in South Melbourne before deciding, almost on a whim, to travel all the way to El Paso, Texas to collaborate and finish the record with fellow musicians, Gabriel Gonzalez and Jim Ward(At The Drive In, Sparta, Sleepercar) at Clap of Thunder Studios.
‘The Way We Were Raised’ is an album awash with symbolic implication of the way things were and the reason they are today.

Passerby Chorale - Gabriel Lynch
‘It’s a soundtrack for the nomads,’ explains Gabriel Lynch, who has just completed work on his extraordinary forthcoming release, Passerby Chorale. Produced with the support of ARIA award winning engineer, Doug Brady, the album boasts some of Lynch’s rawest and most emotionally charged material to date.
Stealing You - George Condos
This album is a nice collection of 11 tracks written over a long period of time by George Condos. The tracks combine excellent guitar playing, arrangement, traditional dance rhythms, and poetry.
George himself says "All the eleven pieces of Stealing You have an emotive or thematic character, I hope they have given you pleasure and that you have connected in your own way to the music".
In Mary's Hands - Mike Brady
Mike Brady has had a great career as a performer, song writer, producer and publisher. Mike wrote "Up There Cazaly", a jingle to promote the Victorian Football League (VFL), which reached #1 on the Australian charts in September 1979. It sold 250,000 copies making it the most popular single ever released by an Australian artist in Australia at that time.
In July 1980, in Brady's own studios, Joe Dolce recorded the song "Shaddap You Face". The song was best selling Australian song in Australia. "Shaddup You Face" reached the top of the United Kingdom charts and became an international hit in Europe and the United States, selling four million copies worldwide.
Mike Brady has continued to work in advertising writing jingles, such as "Dodo, Dodo, internet that flies" for Dodo Internet and "Lucky you're with AAMI". Brady has written songs for popular Australian artists such as John Farnham and Tina Arena and produced albums by Arena and Colleen Hewett. He also wrote the song "Courage in their Eyes" for the Seven Network's Olympics coverage. He is now working on the 3AW radio station in Melbourne.
Brady, was commissioned to write St Mary's Arms for the canonisation of Australia's first saint Mother MacKillop.
Smoke in the Rearview Mirror - Winterman
Smoke in the Rearview is an album I mastered in 2010 and I still listen to it now, regularly. It is a really well paced album, with great songs and variation - there are nice guitar riffs, vocal melodies and even Joe's child's toy piano. I guess it recalls the Wall Flowers in style a bit, which has to be a good thing. The album was recorded in a home studio so time was no obstacle. It sounds to me to have been produced with a great deal of care.
Joe and I sat in mastering for a whole day and well into the night - I walked out of the session around 1am. I didn't mind - it was great to have a client who knew every nuance of every part of the album. Joe knew the mixes so well and could really hear the effect of the mastering process. I enjoyed the session and I think the album is a beautiful piece of work.
Realisations - Adam Rigley
Realisations is Adam Rigley's debut album. Adam has worked in the Australian music industry for the last 9 years as a session keyboard player and Vocalist. He has also sung backing vocals in channel 9's Carols by Candlelight's orchestra. He has played on Australian TV shows including: ‘Rove Live’, ‘The Footy Show’, Channel 9’s ‘Grand Final Breakfast’, ‘Good Morning Australia’, Channel 7’s ‘Good Friday Appeal’, The ‘Perth Telethon’ and more.
His songs are sure to challenge you lyrically, melodically and musically, leaving a permanent mark on you. Adam explains: "I have created my own sound through life’s experiences, personal taste as well as being influenced by many musicians on a global scale.” His journey has helped create the unique sound of 'Realisations' and he and his incredible band will blow you away every single time. Enjoy.
One True Religion - Greg Champion
It's been said of Greg "Champs" Champion that he has contributed to the fabric of Australian culture. Front man with ground-breaking Melbourne rock bands The Fabulaires and The Young Homebuyers, Greg performed with Australian legends Wayne Burt (Black Sorrows, JoJo Zep), JJ Hackett (Stars, Mondo Rock) and, later in the '80s, with Wayne Duncan and Ross Hannaford, both of Daddy Cool.
Greg is at the core of the Coodabeen Champions, which has become an institution on commercial and ABC radio over an amazing thirty years. Champs rose to national prominence in 1986 with the release of the widely-loved single "I Made a 100 In The Backyard At Mum's" which was chosen as the leading track on the first Australia All Over album compiled by ABC's Ian McNamara. It over 150,000 copies. In 1995, Channel 7 took up Greg's anthem That's The Thing About Football as a theme for their AFL broadcasts over several years.
One True Religion is Greg's recent song about AFL, mastered by Rupert Coffey.

Hold On - Vita Adam

Since winning the Musical Challenge, Vita has released four successful singles, "Runnin", "Turn It Up", "Streetlights" and "Hold On" (co-written with Roma Waterman).
Vita Adam has performed at Easterfest 2010 and 2011.
EP - Cavalcade
Cavalcade is four friends who love punk rock, and play in a punk rock band. Guitarist Damien Maunders recorded the album himself at Armstrong Studios in Melbourne. Damo is a sound engineer who assisted on John Farnham's recent album Jack.
These guys produce some pretty intense sounds and so mastering was an awesome experience. The sound hits you like a wall and it needs to be loud. The challenge is trying to keep the attacks of drums while achieving a tight energy in the guitars. EQ was very important to create a bit more space and clarity.
An End and a Beginning - Age of Sinfonia
Age of Sinfonia is a symphonic metal band out of Singapore. They combine two opposing styles - operatic vocals with symphonic strings, and a heavy metal rhythm section. This combination presents an interesting challenge from a mastering point of view. I wanted to get the track's level up, while retaining the space required for the vocals. It took quite a lot of time but I think the result is good.
I was fortunate to have access to Edensound's range of dynamic EQ and compression options for this album.
It Just Feels Right - Unison
Sydney hip-hop group UNISON, fronted by rappers MiLo & Noodlez and backed up on the vinyls by Dj Adverse, promise to be the new sensations in the world of Hip Hop! Unison’s dynamic performance catapulted them into the grand final of Sydney’s 96.1 FM’s Battle of the Unsigned Artist competition.
Now with almost 1,000 downloads off their website for their debut EP "The Start Of Something New...", the Unison crew decided it was time to put their crafty heads together to write new lyrics and compose fresh beats. It Just Feels Right is Unison's second EP, mastered by Rupert Coffey.
Bit of Earth - Sue Baker
Bit of Earth is a an album full of great songs by Sue Baker. Sue has always sung and written music, and this is her first album. It is great to work with material recorded in home studios because the performances tend to be very natural, and you get a sense that a lot of time has been spent on the music.
The challenges of recording outside commercial studios are vast though, and and as a mastering engineer you tend to inherit a range of challenges. I spent a lot of time with EQ on this album, trying to correct room frequencies and also ringing sounds in the instruments. Compression needed to be delicate on these recordings and it is. But the results are nice and I think the EQ gave a lot of added clarity to the mixes.
Infatuation - Kate Alexa
"Infatuation" by Kate Alexa reached #14 on the UK Club Charts.
Return to the top of the screen to watch Kate's music video for "Infatuation".
Unravel - Gemma Belfrage
Unravel is a beautiful song, expertly mixed and produced by Doug Brady, so there was not a massive amount to do in mastering. Gemma has a lovely dynamic range and Doug managed to maintain a lot of that range in his recording and mix. In mastering I was able to tighten the whole track and it sounds great. I'm looking forward to hearing what Gemma does next.
Fly Towards The Sun - 10 Bastards
I mastered Fly Towards The Sun having mixed it, and I mixed it having written and arranged, programmed and performed everything on it. It was a unique experience actually, because I spend so much time working on it in a bedroom a few years ago. At the time I was only mixing and producing, and then I was at a loss as to what more I could do to get the tracks to commercial level, and I was also frustrated as to why it sounded great on certain systems, and not so great on others e.g. in the car. I hear this from mix engineers a lot these days.
I took the album into Edensound a couple of years after working there to revisit it. I was pleased with the sound but after mastering it sounds 100 times better. The process proved to me you can get great results at home if you know what you are doing. And by taking the step to master material professionally, you can get superb results.
Until Dawn - Kate Finkelstein
Until Dawn is a great song written by Lee Bradshaw, and performed by Kate Finkelstein. Martin Pullan and I mastered the track together and it came up sounding amazing.
Blue Jeans - Justine Turner
Justine Turner is an independent artist out of Western Australia. Her song Blue Jeans was written and produced by Lee Bradshaw, and Martin Pullan and I mastered it together.
Sieg - The Khoen Sieg

Deep Purple Mixing - first EVER performance of Smoke on the Water!
Machine Head is often cited as influential in the development of the heavy metal music genre. It is Deep Purple's most successful recording, topping the charts in several countries following its release. The album reached number 1 in the United Kingdom and stayed in the top 40 for 20 weeks. Deep Purple recorded through December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland, and released the album in March 1972.
In celebration of the release, Deep Purple recorded at the BBC for their "In Concert" live series on 9 March , 1972, with DJ Mike Harding as compere. This recording features the only known live recording of "Never Before" (it was out as a single at the time) and a rare Mk II offering of "Maybe I'm a Leo". These two songs were played to promote the new forthcoming album Machine Head, released at the end of the month (March 1972). The recording of "Smoke on the Water" is the first ever live performance .
Now 40 years on , and in celebration of the 40th anniversary of one of rock's great albums, the In Concert performances are finally being restored, remixed and mastered 96Khz 24bit by Martin Pullan.
